Murray Calloway County Animal Shelter

Calloway County Animal Control

Serving the Community's Animal Needs

The shelter employs two Animal Control Officers, both certified through the National Animal Care and Control Association (NACA).

Animal Control Officers operate in accordance with Kentucky statutes (KRS 258, 259, and 525). They respond to a variety of animal-related calls including welfare and cruelty checks, stray or loose animals, injured animals, and bite incidents involving dogs, cats, or livestock. Reports are documented and addressed as quickly as possible.

An Animal Control Officer is on call each day to respond to emergencies outside of regular business hours. After-hours calls are handled through the Calloway County Sheriff’s Department Dispatch at 270-753-3151.

Any dog or cat that bites a person and breaks the skin is required to undergo a 10-day quarantine. If Calloway County Animal Control must hold the animal during this quarantine period and the animal has an owner, the owner is responsible for a $100 quarantine fee.

We do not pick up deceased animals. Citizens can use the following resources:

FAQs

Send us a message on our Facebook page, text: 270-227-7600 with pics and information on description and location found, and take to a local vet to scan for a microchip. If needed use the safety kennels at the Animal Shelter (located to the left of the building and fill out the information sheet). Do not put cats in the outside kennels. Please wait until next business day and text the ACO cell with information for a social media alert.

Owners may reclaim their pets during regular shelter hours. A $10 per day boarding fee applies to all animals starting on the first day the pet is held.

If you are unable to pay the fees, speak with the shelter director about possible options. Dogs must have proof of a current rabies vaccination (KRS 258.215) when being reclaimed. Microchips are available at the shelter for $10.

Adoptable pets can be viewed at the shelter Monday through Friday from 11:30 am to 4:00 pm and Saturdays from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. You can also see available animals on our Facebook page or on our adoption page.

Adoption fees for dogs and cats are $60 if the animal has not yet been spayed or neutered. An additional $80 refundable deposit is required and will be returned once proof of spay or neuter is provided.

If the animal has already been spayed or neutered, the adoption fee is $100.

Dog adoptions include distemper/parvo vaccinations, deworming, a microchip, and a kennel cough vaccine. Cat adoptions include a microchip, vaccinations and deworming. Adoption specials may occasionally be offered, so check the shelter’s Facebook page for current promotions.

If you’ve lost a pet, visit the shelter in person to check for your animal and leave your contact information along with a description of the pet. If you have Facebook, you should make a post with a photo of your pet. You can also check the shelter’s Facebook page for recent intakes or text 270-227-7600 for assistance.

Yes. The shelter can assist with stray or alley cats by offering spay/neuter and vaccination services at no cost. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, call 270-759-4141.

There are several ways to support the shelter. Volunteers are always welcome and may apply in person at the shelter. Volunteers must be 18 years old or accompanied by an adult.

Donations are also appreciated. The shelter accepts pet food, supplies, and monetary contributions. Donations currently help support the effort to build a new animal shelter for the community. You can donate here!

Barking is a normal behavior for dogs, but excessive barking can become a problem for owners and neighbors. Many attempts to stop barking are unsuccessful because they do not address the underlying cause. Yelling, unintentionally rewarding the behavior, or inconsistent discipline can often make the issue worse.
