Volunteering & Foster Program

Volunteering

Volunteers play an important role in supporting the shelter and helping care for animals in need. Whether it’s spending time with the animals, assisting with daily tasks, or helping with events, every effort makes a difference.

Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community while making a direct impact on the lives of local pets. Those interested can apply using the linked form below. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old or accompanied by an adult, and a signed waiver is required before getting started. Must provide a copy of your drivers license or ID card.

Types of volunteer shifts:

  • Dog Care
  • Cat Care
  • Event
  • Local Transport (30 minutes & under)
  • Rescue Transport (1+ hours)
  • Cleaning

The shelter appreciates the time, energy, and compassion that volunteers bring each day.

Foster Program

Fostering provides a temporary home for animals who need extra time, care, or a break from the shelter environment. Foster homes help animals adjust to life outside the shelter, learn routines, and receive more individualized attention while they wait for adoption.

If you’re interested in fostering, you can complete the Murray Calloway Foster Program On-Deck Survey to indicate your availability. This allows the shelter to match animals with foster homes as needs arise.

When an animal is ready for foster placement, staff will refer to the On-Deck list and prioritize based on availability and compatibility with the animal. If you are selected, you will receive an email with details about the animal and next steps. Timely responses are important, as placements may move to the next available foster if confirmation is delayed.

Fostering is a flexible and meaningful way to support the shelter and make a direct impact on the lives of animals in need.

Community Engagement

All communication made through agency-related social media is considered a public record under KRS 171.410(1) and is maintained in accordance with KRS 171.410 through 171.740 and 725 KAR Chapter 1.
